Terry McMillan’s I Almost Forgot About You and Who Asked You?
Ok – you can forget aboutI Almost Forgot About You. It’s about revisiting relationships with Ex’es. It’s funny, but not all that deep. On the other hand,Who Asked You? is a good slice-of-life about the years just before and just after Obama’s election in a Black neighborhood in LA. The action focuses on three sisters and their loved ones: kids, grandkids, neighbors. Terry McMillan can really write dialog. After finishing the book, I was sorry that I couldn’t spend more time hearing the sisters complain about each other. I’ll also note that in 1984 or so, when I worked at Old Wives’ Tales Bookstore in SF, McMillan came to our store to do a reading of her first book. Although the turnout was terrible, she had a good sense of humor and was completely gracious to me as staff.
